Patient Stories: Geonilyn B.
"It is so great to have my life back not only for me but for my family as well."
– Geonilyn B.
It started 2 years ago. I was having some knee pain that is how I met Dr. Kirschenbaum. My PMD referred him to me. After a successful knee arthroscopic surgery, the pain to the knee came back, another tear, another surgery. Pain was not going away anymore. My walk seems to be unsteady, and I remember some of my friends telling me I wobble like a duck... Dr. K did hip x-rays, and that is how we found out I had a very bad osteoarthritis on both hips. When he was telling me my options I remember it like a blur, and it seems like he was telling somebody and I was just listening. To be 48 years old, two girls that are 11 and 13, and to have been very active—working full time as a nursing supervisor/ ER nurse, it seems like my world was falling apart. In addition, I know that in my lifetime I might have this surgery again. I went back to work thinking I could delay the surgery. Dr. K put me on pain medications. Well days, months of pain to not only my knees but also my thighs and hips. In spite of losing weight, exercises, PT, acupuncture. Pain, pain was slowing me down. I was popping medications like crazy just to be able to work and be a mother. Then eventually I had to use a cane because it was getting harder and harder to walk.
My life progressively became less active. I remember my husband telling me I am not having any fun anymore, I am getting crankier, less sleep from the pain and getting depress. Therefore, we decided I was having the total hip replacement.
I was so happy and yet skeptical when Dr. K told me he can do both of my hips at the same time. However, I just wanted to get it over with, because I was afraid if I do one at a time, it might take me awhile to do the next one. In addition, as the doctor had said, "I was going to have a discount on the pain and physical therapy". It was hard to walk at first since you do not have a strong leg to stand on, but I am very happy to get it over and done with. I left the rehab center walking with two canes. I went for my first appointment with one cane. Two months after, I was barely using my cane. I do not even remember when the last time I took my pain medication. I am so happy I did it.
Dr. K and staff were so wonderful; they guided me all the way. I felt so blessed to have known you all.
Thank you so very much, it is so great to have my life back not only for me but for my family as well.
